Clothing Manufacturing Lead Times: Build a Realistic Schedule

There is no responsible single lead-time promise for every garment. A repeat order with approved material differs from a new collection needing patterns, samples and custom fabric. Build the schedule from decisions and dependencies.

Separate stages

Allow for brief review, pattern and sample work, fit revisions, material sourcing, production, inspection and dispatch. Some activities can overlap, while others depend on sign-off. Decide who supplies artwork and when the buyer will approve it.

Track the critical approvals

Late changes to fabric, colour, trims or measurements may restart sampling or procurement. Record the approved specification and decision date. Ask which milestones are provisional and what information must arrive before a confirmed production slot.

Add sensible contingency

Material shortages, rework and shipping disruptions can occur. The right buffer depends on the product and route, not a universal number. Agree a written update cadence and escalation point for delays.
