Sustainable Fabric Sourcing for Clothing: Ask Better Questions

A fabric name alone does not prove environmental performance. Material origin, processing, durability and supporting documentation all matter. Buyers should define what they mean by “sustainable” for a particular product before putting a claim on its label.

Translate values into requirements

Decide whether your priority is certified content, recycled inputs, durability, lower waste or another measurable criterion. Specify fibre composition, weight, hand-feel and performance alongside the sourcing goal so the garment remains fit for purpose.

Request evidence for the exact lot

Ask which certificate, transaction record or test applies to the supplier, fabric and batch. A generic logo on a website does not establish that your order is certified. Get qualified review of any claim intended for consumers in your selling markets.

Prototype before committing

Alternative fabrics may change shrinkage, colour, feel and pattern behaviour. Make and wash a sample in the selected material. Record trade-offs in availability, cost and minimum purchase quantities rather than treating sustainability as a single checkbox.
