Fabric selection is both a design and a supply decision. A textile that looks right in a swatch may behave differently when cut, sewn and washed. Start with the end garment and create an identifiable material specification.

Create a useful enquiry

State whether the fabric is knitted or woven, its intended composition, approximate weight, stretch, hand-feel, finish and colour. If you have a swatch, label it and say what you like about it. Include expected consumption or garment quantity and timing.

Approve more than a screen colour

Review physical swatches or lab dips and, for important orders, relevant tests such as shrinkage and colourfastness. Shade can vary by production lot. Record the approved reference and the rule for substitutions.

Connect sourcing to pattern and costing

Width, yield, defects and minimum purchase quantities affect consumption and price. Confirm whether the supplier can repeat the material for a reorder. Sample the garment in the chosen fabric before locking the pattern and quote.
